A few general comments:
- GE is the best anywhere, followed by IBM, but sometimes Siemens and Samsung will blow your mind with their prices. For example, I just got a 30% discount with Samsung at the Grand Hyatt in Hong Kong.
- I’ve used it probably 40 times in 10 countries and 50% of the time I was asked for ID. I have a stack of business cards that I printed myself and they have been working. Never had a problem, even when I thought there might be one. For example, I have stayed in hotels with special discounts, only to find out later that this was because the office was next door (Intercontinental Beijing/IBM) and my own printed business cards were not questioned.
- I don’t know about other people’s experiences, but when I use these codes and “stay” with these companies, I get upgraded 25% of the time. I still laugh when I hear “Sir, since you are with X company, I am upgrading you to a suite”. The best I ever got was a two-room suite for $81 per night (an IBM discount).
- Personally, this ethical debate is complete nonsense. These hotels are clearly making money with these rates, so why should the executives of a multi-billion dollar company get a discount when individuals have to pay more? You are playing fair.
